Breeding Reliable All-Round Horses

Our Mission
At Stoeterij de Hoge Ginkel, we are on a very specific mission. We aim to breed all- round, level-headed, good-moving, and beautiful horses specifically tailored for non professional riders. As a hobbyist breeder, I know exactly what it feels like to search for a horse that is not only talented but, above all, safe and a joy to ride. For many riders, the ultimate goal is not to win international competitions, but to have a reliable partner for everyday riding, whether that means a relaxed trail ride, a solid dressage test, or a small jumping course. A horse should be a pleasure to work with, both in the saddle and on the ground. That is why we focus entirely on creating well-balanced horses with a golden character, suitable for the everyday equestrian who values connection and safety just as much as quality and movement.

Dressage and showjumping specialisation
To understand why this is so important today, we have to look back at how breeding has changed. About twenty years ago, the major warmblood studbooks made a significant shift. They stopped testing for all-round ability and decided to specialize heavily in either dressage or show jumping bloodlines. The ultimate goal became breeding horses capable of reaching the Grand Prix level. While they have been incredibly successful at achieving this, it has created a gap in the market. Only about two percent of all riders will ever compete at that elite Grand Prix level. The highly sensitive, sharp, and explosive horses bred for top-tier sports simply do not always suit the vast majority of riders. This specialization has made it increasingly difficult for the average equestrian to find a sensible, versatile horse that forgives a mistake and remains calm under pressure.

Old fashioned all round horses
That is exactly where our little stud farm comes in to bridge the gap. We believe in the power of crossbreeding to bring back that much-needed versatility and reliable temperament. We carefully cross high-quality, loyal Iberian mares with carefully selected warmblood stallions. When choosing a stallion, we look far beyond just movement or jumping technique; we specifically select those that have scored a nine or a ten for character and rideability during their stallion tests, preferably with some show jumping ability as well. By combining the brave, people-oriented nature of the Iberian horse with the athletic ability of the warmblood, we create a horse that offers the best of both worlds. Furthermore, we believe that nature must be supported by nurture. From day one, our foals are taught to trust humans, to stand still, to be washed, and to travel, ensuring they grow up to be confident and easy-going partners.

To Wrap Up
Finding a matching, healthy, and reliable horse in today's highly specialized market can be a real hassle for the everyday rider. We understand that struggle, which is why we are so passionate about our approach. If you are looking for an all-round horse with a golden character, please know that we are working on it, one foal at a time.
